You know what's cliché about pirates? Flags.
We usually imagine the Jolly Roger as the symbol of piracy but this specific flag (the skull with the crossed swords) was actually created and made famous by Jack "Calico" Rackham.
Other than that, real pirates used simple black or red flags, sometimes with skeletons, blood and/or hourglass (like Fred here) in a mean to sign clearly to their prey that their time was running out, that they had to surrender or simply, well... no quarter.

Now you have some cool knowledge to drop in at dinner tonight. Yaaaar!
